Estonia has its first female president elected!

Today our first female president of Estonia, Kersti Kaljulaid, has been inaugurated.

In Media about the inauguration of the new president, it was mentioned many times, that the decorations were more beautiful than ever. It is perhaps because she is a woman…

In the process of elections there were two more female-candidates, which didn’t pass the needed number of votes. Those ones were known politicians on political arena in Estonia. But in the end, Kersti was the unknown one, not at all seen in politics before and finally the one, who the Parliament could agree to elect upon with the needed majority voices – over 2/3.

So, what changes can we expect now?

I think it is a great achievement, that a woman takes the post of the President.

Even that they say, that in Estonia, president has a very symbolic role.

Kersti Kaljulaid told herself, that she has conservative approaches to politics. What would she mean with that it relation to gender equality,  I wonder? And in relation to migration or other hot concerns today…? Will she be able to affect important processes in the country and internationally? Will Kesrtsi become a role model for women of Estonia? Will that support the development of equality between men and women in our society?  – Too many questions by now I have…

We will see in the coming 5 years.
